Trump Grants Pardon to Silk Road Founder Ross Ulbricht

In a controversial move, President Donald Trump has pardoned Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the notorious dark web marketplace Silk Road. Ulbricht, who operated under the pseudonym "Dread Pirate Roberts," was serving a life sentence for his role in facilitating the sale of illegal drugs, stolen information, and other illicit services through the platform.

The pardon, announced by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, fulfilled a campaign promise Trump made to the Libertarian Movement. In a statement, Trump expressed his pleasure in granting the pardon, citing the strong support he received from the Libertarian Party. He also took the opportunity to criticise federal prosecutors, labelling them as "scum" and "lunatics" involved in what he described as the weaponisation of government against him.

Ulbricht’s family expressed immense gratitude for the pardon, thanking Trump and his supporters on a website dedicated to tracking his case. Ulbricht had been convicted in 2015 on multiple charges, including distributing narcotics, engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise, and conspiring to commit computer hacking and money laundering.

The Silk Road platform, which operated from January 2011 until its shutdown by law enforcement in October 2013, was popular for its anonymity and use of bitcoin for transactions. Prosecutors claimed that Ulbricht earned at least $13 million in commissions from running the site. The platform facilitated the sale of hundreds of kilograms of narcotics and offered services such as hacking, malware, and fake legal documents.

The pardon has reignited debates about government overreach and criminal justice reform. While some view it as a gesture of justice, others see it as a dangerous precedent. The decision has also raised questions about whether other individuals connected to Silk Road will receive similar clemency.
