St. Helena Public Library alerts community of potential data breach following cyberattack

St. Helena Public Library, alongside sister libraries in Solano County, faces the aftermath of a cyberattack, prompting concerns about a potential data breach. Dubbed Solano Partner Libraries and St. Helena (SPLASH), the computer network fell victim to hackers on April 5, demanding a ransom of $100,000 to prevent the release of stolen data.

Although the attack primarily impacted Solano County’s nine libraries, disrupting internet access and internal record-keeping systems, uncertainty looms over whether St. Helena patrons’ data was compromised. St. Helena’s data is stored in a distinct cloud-based system, with the city cautioning that data leakage is possible but remains unconfirmed as of Saturday afternoon.

Despite the incident, the St. Helena library continues normal operations, ensuring full access to internet services, Wi-Fi, computers, and phones. The city emphasizes its commitment to data security, collaborating with cybersecurity experts to investigate the attack’s origins, assess potential impacts, and bolster security measures accordingly.

While the library doesn’t retain sensitive financial information, the city advises patrons to monitor their accounts for any unusual activity and remain vigilant against the potential exploitation of personal data. Additionally, recipients are urged to exercise caution regarding unsolicited communications purportedly from the library or related parties, which could attempt to capitalize on the situation.

For inquiries or assistance, individuals are encouraged to contact the library directly via phone at 707-963-5244 or email at SHLibrary@cityofsthelena.org.
