VIT Bhopal University, a premier academic institution in India, has allegedly experienced a major data breach, putting the sensitive information of over 8,000 students and faculty at risk. The breach was first reported on June 10, 2024, on the data hacking website BreachForums, where a threat actor claimed to have leaked substantial data.
The threat actor shared screenshots on BreachForums, claiming possession of crucial information, including unique identification numbers, login credentials, full names, email addresses, passwords, and user activation keys for students and faculty members. This data could potentially grant unauthorized access to personal accounts and university resources, heightening security concerns.
The alleged data breach has caused considerable anxiety among students and faculty, who fear the misuse of stolen passwords, emails, and other personal information. Concerns are particularly high regarding potential targeted phishing attacks, where hackers could use compromised email addresses to send deceptive messages appearing to be from legitimate university sources.
As of now, VIT Bhopal has not publicly responded to the allegations. There is no clear information on the extent of the breach or the measures being taken to address the situation. Updates will be provided as the university releases more information.
Established in 2017, VIT Bhopal is a deemed university located near Bhopal, the capital city of Madhya Pradesh. Authorized by the University Grants Commission (UGC), the institution maintains high teaching, examination, and research standards. It ranks 65th among all universities in India according to the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).
