Republicans Push for FBI Inquiry into Temu’s Data Practices Following TikTok Concerns

Republican members of the U.S. House of Representatives are calling for an investigation into the Chinese online marketplace, Temu, over concerns about how it handles the data of American citizens. The request was made in a letter to the FBI and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), citing potential links between Temu, its parent company Pinduoduo (PDD), and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

The committee members compared the situation to the ongoing scrutiny of TikTok, expressing fears that Chinese national security laws could enable the CCP to access U.S. citizens’ personal and economic data through companies like Temu. "We have concerns that the CCP is exploiting the free market and the personal data of U.S. citizens," the letter stated.

Temu, which allows Chinese manufacturers to sell directly to U.S. consumers at low prices, has grown significantly in popularity since its launch in 2022, particularly after high-profile advertisements during the Super Bowl. However, the platform and its parent company Pinduoduo have faced several controversies, including accusations of exploiting forced labour and concerns over its data collection practices.

Last year, Google suspended Pinduoduo from its app store after researchers found malware in its app, raising further alarm over data security. Additionally, in February 2024, U.S. citizens filed a lawsuit against Temu over similar concerns.

The Republicans’ letter calls for answers about whether the FBI and SEC have conducted any investigations into Temu and how the two agencies collaborate on national security issues involving Chinese companies. The request reflects growing concerns in the U.S. about the influence of Chinese firms in key markets.
