Ohio Man Sentenced to 3 Years for Running Helix Cryptocurrency Mixer

Larry Dean Harmon, the Ohio native behind the Helix cryptocurrency mixing service, was sentenced on Friday to three years in prison. The 41-year-old from Akron had pleaded guilty in 2021 to conspiracy to commit money laundering, though his sentencing comes three years later. Officials have not clarified the delay.

In addition to his prison term, Harmon will face three years of supervised release and has been ordered to forfeit over $311 million in illicit profits, alongside real estate, seized cryptocurrencies, and assets totalling more than $400 million.

Harmon operated Helix from 2014 to 2017, facilitating the laundering of over $300 million in cryptocurrency through his platform. Helix used a technique called "mixing" or "tumbling," which pools and redistributes cryptocurrency funds to obscure their origin, making it a favourite tool for cybercriminals.

The platform was closely linked to Grams, a darknet search engine also created by Harmon, and was widely used by online drug dealers and other criminal enterprises. The Justice Department noted that Helix processed 354,468 Bitcoin, valued at $311 million during its operation, and served as a financial gateway for darknet markets like AlphaBay and Evolution.

Harmon’s brother, Gary Harmon, was also implicated, receiving a four-year sentence last year for attempting to steal and access Bitcoin assets seized by authorities.

This case is part of a broader crackdown on cryptocurrency mixing services, which are frequently used for money laundering. Services such as Tornado Cash, ChipMixer, and Bitcoin Fog have faced sanctions or shutdowns in recent years. Just last week, Roman Sterlingov, the individual behind Bitcoin Fog, received a 12-year prison sentence for related offences.

Law enforcement agencies continue to grapple with the proliferation of these platforms, likening their pursuit to a game of "whack-a-mole" as new tools emerge to replace dismantled services.
