Utility technology firm Itron, Inc. confirmed that an unauthorized third party gained access to portions of its internal systems in a cyberattack detected in April, prompting the company to activate its incident response protocols and launch an ongoing investigation.
The Washington-based company identified the intrusion on April 13, 2026, and immediately initiated its cybersecurity response plan. The effort included notifying law enforcement authorities and engaging external advisors to assist with assessing, mitigating, and containing the incident.
The unauthorized activity has since been blocked, and no further suspicious activity has been observed. Itron stated that its business operations were not materially disrupted and that it does not anticipate any significant ongoing impact from the breach.
Itron, a publicly traded provider of utility technology solutions for energy and water resource management, plays a role in critical infrastructure systems including electricity grids, water distribution networks, and gas services. The company employs approximately 5,600 people, serves 7,700 customers across 100 countries, and manages roughly 112 million endpoints. It reported $2.4 billion in revenue for 2025 and is listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange.
The company indicated that the unauthorized access did not extend to customer systems. However, the full scope and impact of the incident remain under investigation.
Itron expects that a significant portion of the costs associated with the incident will be covered by insurance. No ransomware group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
