MoneyGram, the U.S.-based financial services company known for enabling money transfers, bill payments, and cryptocurrency trades, has temporarily suspended operations due to a cybersecurity breach. The incident, which came to light on Friday, September 20, initially appeared to be a network connectivity issue but was later revealed to be more serious.
On Monday, September 23, MoneyGram posted a statement on social media platform X, acknowledging the cybersecurity issue and confirming that certain systems had been affected. The company swiftly responded by launching an investigation, taking systems offline, and implementing protective measures. MoneyGram stated, “We are working with leading external cybersecurity experts and coordinating with law enforcement.”
MoneyGram’s services remain offline, with affected customers, including those at UK Post Office branches, unable to use MoneyGram for online or in-branch services. The UK Post Office expressed regret for the disruption, indicating the suspension impacts access to MoneyGram services nationwide.
Although MoneyGram has not confirmed the precise nature of the cybersecurity incident, speculation has arisen that the company may be the victim of a ransomware attack. This assumption is driven by MoneyGram taking its systems offline, a common response to ransomware attacks where systems are isolated to prevent further damage.
MoneyGram has yet to provide a timeline for when services will resume, but it continues to work with cybersecurity experts and law enforcement to restore operations as quickly as possible.
