MathWorks confirms ransomware breach exposing data of more than 10,000 people

MathWorks, the Massachusetts-based software company best known for its MATLAB and Simulink platforms, has confirmed that a ransomware attack compromised the personal data of more than 10,000 individuals following a breach of its network in April.

The company disclosed the incident on May 27, linking ongoing outages in several of its online services to the ransomware intrusion. The attack disrupted multi-factor authentication, single sign-on, the MathWorks cloud center, file exchange, license center, and its online store, affecting both staff and customers.

In a filing with the Maine Attorney General’s Office, MathWorks reported that the breach went undetected for over a month until it was discovered on May 18. The company said attackers stole data belonging to 10,476 individuals. Separate breach notification letters filed in Massachusetts revealed that the stolen information included names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, and in some cases, non-U.S. national identification numbers.

Although MathWorks has confirmed it was the target of a ransomware operation, it has not disclosed which group was responsible. No ransomware gang has publicly claimed the attack, raising questions about whether negotiations are ongoing or if a ransom has already been paid.

MathWorks, founded in 1984 and headquartered in Natick, Massachusetts, employs more than 6,500 people across 34 offices worldwide. Its flagship products, MATLAB and Simulink, are used by over 100,000 organizations and more than 5 million customers in fields ranging from engineering to finance.

The company has not yet responded to requests for additional details regarding the breach.
