Global Police Operation Dismantles 'Ghost' Encrypted Communication Platform

A global law enforcement operation, coordinated by Europol, has successfully dismantled the encrypted communications platform ’Ghost,’ which was widely used by organised crime groups worldwide. The Australian Federal Police (AFP) announced the arrest of Jay Je Yoon Jung, the 32-year-old Australian mastermind behind the platform.

’Ghost’ was distributed through modified mobile phones and allowed users to communicate securely, with features including remote data wiping. Since its inception in 2015, the platform had reportedly served thousands of users, facilitating criminal activities such as drug trafficking and contract killings. Servers supporting the platform were located in France and Iceland.

The AFP claims that ’Ghost’ was favoured by criminals from various groups, including Italian and Middle Eastern organised crime, as well as outlaw motorcycle gangs. Deputy Commissioner Ian McCartney stated, "We allege that hundreds of criminals have used ’Ghost’ to import drugs and order killings both in Australia and overseas."

In the coordinated global takedown, 51 suspects have been arrested across Australia, Ireland, Canada, and Italy, including members of the Italian Sacra Corona Unita mafia. Additionally, a drug lab in Australia was dismantled, and €1 million in cash, along with weapons and drugs, were seized globally.

Authorities have also revealed that around 376 ’Ghost’ devices remain active in Australia. Thanks to the operation, law enforcement has prevented the distribution of over 200 kilograms of illicit drugs and seized 25 firearms.

Jay Je Yoon Jung is due to appear in court and could face up to 26 years in prison if convicted of all charges.
