German Authorities Dismantle Major Illegal Marketplace Crimenetwork

German law enforcement has taken down Crimenetwork, the country’s largest German-speaking online marketplace for illegal goods, following a major investigation that resulted in the arrest of a 29-year-old suspected administrator.

The Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) announced the arrest, stating that the suspect, who allegedly served as the platform’s technical administrator, is also accused of drug trafficking. The operation led to the confiscation of luxury cars and digital assets worth approximately €1 million.

Operating since 2012, Crimenetwork facilitated transactions for stolen data, counterfeit documents, and drugs, primarily targeting German-speaking users. The platform boasted a user base exceeding 100,000 individuals, along with over 100 sellers actively conducting transactions, prior to its closure.

The marketplace relied on cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Monero for transactions, generating significant profits. From 2018 to 2024, it is estimated to have processed 1,000 Bitcoin (worth nearly $95 million) and 20,000 Monero coins (valued at around $4 million). Crimenetwork’s operators profited from transaction fees, seller subscriptions, and advertising revenue.

Investigators have obtained a large volume of user and transaction data, potentially leading to further arrests as the inquiry continues.

This action is part of a broader global crackdown on criminal networks. In recent weeks, European authorities dismantled an encrypted messaging service used for organised crime and shut down a large illegal streaming network. In the U.S., law enforcement disrupted PopeyeTools, an online marketplace for stolen credit card details and hacking tools.

The BKA highlighted the importance of disrupting these platforms, which enable the proliferation of illegal activities and contribute to organised crime. The investigation into Crimenetwork remains ongoing.
