French news agency AFP targeted amid rising cybersecurity threats

Agence France-Presse (AFP), one of the world’s largest news organizations, announced on Saturday that it had been targeted in a cyberattack. The breach, which was detected on Friday, affected a portion of AFP’s systems used to transmit news to clients. However, the newsroom and global reporting services continued to operate without interruption.

AFP’s technical teams are working closely with the French National Agency for IT Systems Security (ANSSI) to assess the damage and restore full functionality in response to the attack. Despite the incident, the news agency reassured clients that it remains committed to providing real-time news coverage worldwide.

While the exact perpetrator or motive behind the attack remains unclear, AFP has notified French authorities, and a formal investigation is underway. The agency released a statement emphasizing its ongoing efforts to mitigate the effects of the breach: “AFP’s technical teams are working on the incident with the support of ANSSI.”

The attack on AFP comes during heightened cyber tensions in Europe, particularly following a wave of cyber incidents in France earlier this year. In March, several French ministries and state institutions were targeted in a significant cyberattack, which pro-Russian hackers later claimed responsibility for, though French authorities did not officially confirm. Similarly, in May, Poland’s state news agency PAP was hacked, with Warsaw blaming Russian intelligence services.

Given the geopolitical climate, including tensions related to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, concerns about cyberattacks aimed at destabilizing Western institutions have grown. While there is no confirmation of any direct link between the AFP breach and prior incidents, the ongoing investigation may shed light on whether this attack fits into broader patterns of cyber warfare.
