Data storage devices maker Western Digital, which manufactures and sells data tech products, including data storage devices, cloud storage services, and data center systems, disclosed a network security incident in which an unauthorized third party gained access to several of its internal systems on March 26.
The California-based company confirmed that hackers exfiltrated data from its systems after the breach, causing system disruption in parts of its business operations. Western Digital has not disclosed how it was compromised, but its statement implies that the incident was caused by ransomware. The perpetrators of the attack are still unknown.
Western Digital also stated that the incident could continue to disrupt business operations. The company provided no additional information.
Western Digital’s service status website confirmed that its My Cloud network-attached storage (NAS) service, which allows customers to access their files via the internet, was unavailable at the time of writing.
Currently, Western Digital is working with an unnamed cybersecurity firm and coordinating with law enforcement to restore impacted infrastructure and services and to understand the nature and scope of the exposed data, following its investigation with outside security and forensic experts, the company said in a statement.
