Ransomware attack on Cleveland City Schools prompts investigation

Cleveland City Schools has reported a ransomware attack that has impacted a portion of its computer network, sparking an investigation in collaboration with law enforcement agencies.

According to an official news release from Cleveland City Schools, the school system became aware of the ransomware attack on Tuesday. Most devices used by students, faculty, and staff remain functional, with the affected devices constituting less than 5 percent of the entire network.

While the school district assures the public that there is "no indication" of compromised data, officials are actively working with the police and Homeland Security to address the incident.

Cleveland City Schools spokesperson Caroline Corrigan emphasized that the district’s response plan was activated immediately after the attack was detected. "Our technology team is working tirelessly to ensure the integrity of our systems and data," Corrigan stated. She further reassured the community that strong backup systems are in place and a third-party recovery company is assisting in minimizing disruptions.

While the investigation into the ransomware attack continues, Cleveland City Schools remains in close coordination with local law enforcement agencies. Corrigan affirmed, "Cleveland City Schools is in close contact with the Cleveland City Police Department and Homeland Security to manage this situation effectively." The district is committed to regularly updating staff, families, and the community as more information becomes available.

This attack on Cleveland City Schools aligns with a disturbing trend observed nationally. Just recently, on August 10, the White House organized a cybersecurity "summit" addressing the surge of ransomware attacks against U.S. schools. Sensitive student data, including medical records and psychiatric evaluations, has been exposed by criminal hackers in these attacks.
