Live Nation faces class action lawsuit following Ticketmaster data breach

Live Nation, the parent company of Ticketmaster, is facing a multi-million dollar class action lawsuit over a significant data breach that exposed the personal information of hundreds of millions of customers earlier this year. The breach, attributed to the hacker group “ShinyHunters,” resulted in the unauthorized access of 1.3 terabytes of data, including sensitive details such as names, addresses, credit card numbers, and payment information of approximately 560 million global customers.

The lawsuit accuses Ticketmaster and Live Nation of negligence, alleging that the companies failed to implement adequate security measures to prevent such an attack. Furthermore, the suit claims that Ticketmaster retained personal information longer than necessary and did not notify affected customers promptly. The plaintiffs seek at least $5 million in damages, although the final sum could be higher as the case progresses.

According to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Live Nation detected unauthorized activity on May 20, 2024, and immediately launched an investigation. The hacker group responsible for the breach reportedly put the stolen data up for sale on the dark web with a price tag of $500,000.

The class action lawsuit also highlights consumers’ dissatisfaction with Ticketmaster’s response to the breach. Although the company eventually offered affected users a free 12-month identity monitoring service, many were upset by the delayed notifications. More than a month had passed since Ticketmaster alerted customers about the breach, which left some vulnerable to fraud and identity theft. Additionally, numerous fans reported that their concert tickets vanished from their accounts, leading to financial losses of up to thousands of dollars. Ticketmaster responded that these incidents were largely due to compromised email accounts, not passwords, that were exposed in the breach.

Beyond the data breach lawsuit, Live Nation and Ticketmaster also face mounting legal challenges on other fronts. The companies are under investigation by the Department of Justice and 39 U.S. states, along with the District of Columbia, in an antitrust lawsuit accusing them of monopolistic and anti-competitive practices. This separate legal action aims to dismantle the Ticketmaster and Live Nation pairing.
