Lingnan University suffers cybersecurity breach, sensitive data exposed

Lingnan University in Hong Kong has reported a cybersecurity breach that resulted in the exposure of thousands of internal documents, including approximately 200 files containing sensitive personal data. The university discovered the breach on March 11, 2025, and responded by immediately deactivating the compromised system to prevent further data leakage.

The breach has affected faculty members, students, and former course applicants, with exposed data including names, photographs, personal contact details, identification card information, as well as financial, educational, and employment-related records. In light of the incident, authorities have contacted those impacted and are providing necessary support to mitigate potential risks associated with the data leak.

A university spokesperson reiterated Lingnan University’s commitment to data security, stating that the institution is conducting a thorough review of all similar systems to identify vulnerabilities and strengthen cybersecurity protocols. The university has pledged to implement enhanced security measures to better protect its digital infrastructure against future threats.

“We deeply regret this incident and are taking every step to ensure such breaches do not recur,” the spokesperson said.
