Indian IT consulting giant HCL Technologies hit by ransomware attack

Indian multinational IT consulting giant HCL Technologies said it recently suffered a cyber security incident that affected an isolated cloud environment associated with one of its projects.

In a recent filing with the National Stock Exchange of India, HCL Technologies said that it recently became aware of a ransomware attack in an isolated cloud environment for one of its projects.

“There has been no impact observed due to this incident on the overall HCLTech network. Cybersecurity and data protection is a top priority for HCLTech,” said Manish Anand, the company’s secretary.

In its filing with the stock exchange, the IT consulting giant said that it has initiated an investigation to understand the scope of the ransomware attack.

“A detailed investigation is underway in consultation with relevant stakeholders to assess the root cause and take remedial action as necessary,” HCL Technologies added. The company, headquartered in Noida, has offices in 52 countries and employs over 225,000 people.

Soon after news about the data security incident came to light, HCL’s share price in the National Stock Exchange took a dip and was down by at least 3.38% on Wednesday.

Last month, Indian IT service provider Infosys said that its U.S. unit, Infosys McCamish Systems, was impacted by a cyber security event, resulting in the non-availability of certain applications and systems. 

 

The company said it worked with a cyber security company to resolve the issue and launched an investigation to identify the potential impact on systems and data.
