Hitachi Vantara, a subsidiary of the Japanese giant Hitachi, said it suffered a significant data security incident that forced it to take several systems offline.
Headquartered in Santa Clara, California, Hitachi Vantara is a data infrastructure and analytics company that provides storage systems, cloud solutions, and data management software to its clients including Lufthansa, Disney, several national banks, and government organisations.
In a data security incident notice published on its website, Hitachi Vantara said that on April 26, it suffered a significant ransomware attack where threat actors infiltrated its internal network, accessed company data and encrypted certain systems.
Hitachi Vantara immediately launched an investigation, with assistance from external cyber security experts, to determine the scope of the incident. Also, as a precaution, it took several systems offline to contain the incident.
“As soon as we detected suspicious activity, we immediately launched our incident response protocols and engaged third-party subject matter experts to support our investigation and remediation process. We also proactively took our servers offline in order to contain the incident. They will remain offline until we have validated it is safe to restore them and additionally, we have restricted inbound and outbound traffic to our main data center,” Hitachi Vantara said.
The company added that self-hosted clients can continue to access their data as normal, however, “Hitachi Remote Ops and Support Connect are currently inaccessible.”
