Casio yet to recover affected systems following a devastating ransomware attack

Japanese technology giant Casio said that the ransomware attack it suffered earlier this month has caused significant operational delay with no prospect of recovery yet.

Earlier this month, Casio said in a press release that on October 5, an unauthorised third party breached its internal network, prompting it to immediately launch an investigation, with external cyber security experts, to determine the nature and scope of the incident.

“After conducting an internal investigation, it was determined that the unauthorised access had caused a system failure, resulting in the inability to provide some services,” Casio said.

The Underground ransomware group claimed responsibility for the cyber attack on Casio and listed it as a victim on its data leak site. The hacker group claimed to be in possession of confidential data, including legal documents, personal data of employees, employee payroll information, patents information, company financial documents, and more.

Acknowledging the ransomware group’s claims, Casio said in another press statement that it did suffer a ransomware attack earlier this month that caused the service disruption.

In a recent press release, the company said that the ransomware attack caused “significant delays in the delivery of items requested for repair, and many items are backlogged.”

“We are currently continuing our response and aiming to restore the system by the end of November. Therefore, we will temporarily suspend the acceptance of repairs for personal products until the system is restored,” reads the press release.

In a statement shared with TechCrunch, Casio spokesperson Ayuko Hara said that the company sees “no prospect of recovery yet,” adding that the countermeasures taken to deal with the data security incident affected the company’s ability to receive and place orders with suppliers and ship them out on time.

Hara added that the “hackers left a threatening message indicating their intention to leak our data,” however, the company did not receive a ransom demand yet.
