Cambodia Arrests Investigative Journalist Amidst Concerns Over Press Freedom

Cambodian authorities have arrested award-winning journalist Mech Dara, known for his exposés on cyber scams and human trafficking, on charges of "incitement to disturb social security." The arrest occurred on Monday as military police intercepted his vehicle while he was en route to Phnom Penh with his family.

 

Dara, 36, has contributed to several international outlets, including Al Jazeera and the South China Morning Post. His current charges stem from a September social media post depicting damage caused by quarry operations to the steps leading to Ba Phnom, a prominent pagoda in Prey Veng province. Local authorities claimed that Dara’s post incited "social disorder" and disseminated false information.

 

Following his arrest, Dara was placed in pre-trial detention in Kandal province. The charges under Cambodia’s Criminal Code could lead to a prison sentence of up to two years and fines between one million and four million riels (approximately £200 to £800).

 

Human rights groups, including Licadho, have voiced concerns over the implications of Dara’s detention for press freedom in Cambodia. “This arrest exemplifies the government’s attempts to suppress independent journalism,” stated the Committee to Protect Journalists.

 

Dara has been internationally recognised for his investigations into the growing cyber scam industry, documenting the trafficking of individuals coerced into executing scams targeting victims in the US and China. His work was acknowledged last year with a Hero Award from Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

 

The ongoing repression against journalists in Cambodia raises alarm, with experts suggesting that Dara’s arrest may be politically motivated. Licadho has called for the immediate drop of charges against him and an end to harassment of media professionals.
