The notorious ALPHV/BlackCat ransomware gang has claimed responsibility for a major cyber attack on MGM Resorts International which put 31 MGM property websites and the company’s mobile rewards app out of action.
On Monday, hospitality giant MGM Resorts said that it identified a cyber security incident that forced it to initiate a system shutdown, disrupting its operations.
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, the company said, “MGM Resorts recently identified a cybersecurity issue affecting some of the Company’s systems. Promptly after detecting the issue, we quickly began an investigation with assistance from leading external cybersecurity experts.
“We also notified law enforcement and took prompt action to protect our systems and data, including shutting down certain systems. Our investigation is ongoing, and we are working diligently to determine the nature and scope of the matter.”
Various sources reported disruptions across multiple facets of MGM Resorts’ operations, particularly in its Las Vegas establishments. Slot machines and ATMs within the company’s Las Vegas casinos have reportedly ceased functioning, causing inconvenience to patrons.
MGM Resorts’ official website also remains inaccessible, replaced by a temporary landing page offering contact information for its offices in Detroit, Las Vegas, New York, and other major cities.
In another update posted on 12th September, MGM Resorts said, “As an update to our previous statement, our resorts, including dining, entertainment and gaming are currently operational, and continue to deliver the experiences for which MGM is known.
“Our guests remain able to access their hotel rooms and our Front Desk staff is ready to assist our guests as needed. We appreciate your patience.”
Recently, the infamous ALPHV/BlackCat ransomware gang claimed responsibility for the cyber attack on MGM Resorts. As per a post on X from vx-underground, the hacker group claimed to have infiltrated MGM resorts’ network using social engineering tactics.
“All ALPHV ransomware group did to compromise MGM Resorts was hop on LinkedIn, find an employee, then call the Help Desk. A company valued at $33,900,000,000 was defeated by a 10-minute conversation,” the post read.
According to vx-underground, the ALPHV/BlackCat ransomware gang has claimed responsibility for the cyber attack, but according to Cybernews, the group has made
no mention of the attack on its data leak page.
It is so far not clear whether the ransomware group has demanded a ransom or whether the company is negotiating with the group. MGM Resorts also did not comment on whether it is planning to meet the hacker group’s ransom demands.
“We continue to work diligently to resolve our cyber security issue while addressing individual guest needs promptly. We couldn’t do this without the thousands of incredible employees who are committed to guest service and support from our loyal customers,” the hospitality giant said.
