Tech giant Google has agreed to a substantial $93 million settlement to resolve a lawsuit brought forth by the state of California. The lawsuit, which alleged that Google’s location-privacy practices were misleading and violated consumer protection laws, has recently been a focal point of legal scrutiny.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta, at the forefront of the legal battle, stated, "Our investigation revealed that Google was telling its users one thing – that it would no longer track their location once they opted out – but doing the opposite and continuing to track its users’ movements for its commercial gain." This revelation was at the heart of the lawsuit, pointing to a stark contradiction between Google’s stated practices and actions.
The core of the complaint revolved around Google’s handling of location data. Despite assuring users that disabling the "Location History" setting would prevent the storage of their location data, the lawsuit alleged that Google continued to collect this information through alternative means. This contradiction raised concerns about the transparency and accuracy of Google’s privacy practices.
This settlement marks the latest in a string of financial resolutions by Google in response to similar legal challenges from various U.S. states. In November of the previous year, Google agreed to pay $391.5 million to settle complaints from 40 U.S. states. Subsequently, in January 2023, it consented to another settlement of $29.5 million to resolve separate lawsuits brought by Indiana and Washington, D.C. In May 2023, Google reached a $39.9 million settlement with Washington state on comparable grounds. Currently, the company is facing an ongoing location-tracking lawsuit in Texas.
Notably, while settling these cases, Google has not admitted to any wrongdoing. The company has attributed these issues to "outdated product policies that we changed years ago." As part of the settlements, Google has also committed to enhancing user controls and transparency concerning location data.
