Thousands of PSNI officers and staff pursue legal action over data breach

Nearly 5,000 officers and civilian staff of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) are pursuing legal action following a significant data breach incident. Last August, approximately 9,500 workers’ details were inadvertently disclosed in response to a Freedom of Information request. The disclosed information included the surname, first initial, rank or grade, location, and unit of each employee.

PSNI later revealed that the breached data had fallen into the possession of dissident republicans, raising concerns about potential security threats. The force estimated potential liabilities, including security costs and compensation payouts to officers, at £240 million.

Belfast-based law firm Edwards & Co announced its representation of nearly 5,000 affected police officers and staff. Three test cases for a liability-only hearing have been scheduled for June 26, 2024, signaling progress in the legal proceedings. Philip Gordon, a partner at Edwards & Co, expressed optimism about the developments, noting that the court’s decision represents encouraging progress for their clients.

Gordon emphasized that while the court has listed test cases for hearing, each claim will be evaluated individually, considering the unique impact on each plaintiff. He stressed the commitment of the firm to securing the best possible outcome for every client, acknowledging that the process might require time, particularly in assessing damages for each case.
