Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan’s leading telecommunications company, has fallen victim to a significant data breach believed to be orchestrated by Chinese hackers. The breach, resulting in the theft of 1.7TB of data, including government-related information, has prompted the Taiwanese Defense Ministry to call for enhanced cybersecurity measures within the telecom giant.
According to reports, the stolen data, which includes sensitive information from various government agencies such as the armed forces, foreign affairs ministry, and coast guard, has been made available for sale on the Dark Web. Despite the breach, Taiwanese officials have assured the public that no confidential information was compromised in the incident.
The Defense Ministry confirmed the breach to news sources on March 1, highlighting the seriousness of the situation. In response, the ministry has urged Chunghwa Telecom to bolster its information security controls to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
The suspected involvement of Chinese hackers in the breach underscores the ongoing cybersecurity challenges faced by Taiwan, particularly in the context of its complex relationship with China.
