London-based engineering giant Smiths Group has disclosed a cybersecurity breach after attackers gained unauthorized access to the company’s systems. The multinational firm, listed on the London Stock Exchange, employs over 15,000 people in more than 50 countries and serves industries such as energy, safety, security, aerospace, and defense. Smiths reported £3,132 million in revenue in its most recent fiscal year.
The company revealed the breach in a Tuesday filing with the London Stock Exchange, describing it as a "cyber security incident" involving unauthorized system access. Upon detecting the intrusion, Smiths promptly isolated affected systems and activated its business continuity plans.
"Smiths is working with cyber security experts to recover affected systems and determine any wider impact on the business," the company said. It assured stakeholders that necessary measures were being taken to meet regulatory requirements and pledged to provide updates as more information became available.
While the exact timeline of the breach and whether sensitive business or customer data was compromised remain undisclosed, Smiths has engaged cybersecurity experts to assess and mitigate the situation. A spokesperson for the company declined to provide additional details.
The breach adds Smiths Group to a growing list of high-profile organizations targeted by cyberattacks in recent weeks. Last week, American business services firm and government contractor Conduent revealed that an outage had been caused by a "cyber security incident." Around the same time, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) announced an investigation into claims of a breach involving stolen documents from its developer environments.
Earlier this month, U.K. domain registry Nominet confirmed a network breach exploiting a vulnerability in Ivanti VPN software, a zero-day flaw linked to a China-associated espionage group called UNC5337.
