Paramount Global discloses data breach exposing sensitive information

Paramount Global, a prominent entity in the American entertainment industry, has disclosed a data breach wherein its systems were compromised by hackers who gained unauthorized access to individuals’ personally identifiable information (PII).

The breach came to light following an investigation by the company’s cybersecurity experts, prompting swift action and implementing enhanced security measures.

As per breach notification letters signed by Brian Keane, the Executive Vice President of Nickelodeon Animation Studio, the unauthorized access occurred between May and June of this year. The breach exposed individuals’ highly sensitive personal details, including their names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, government-issued identification numbers such as driver’s licenses and passport numbers, and information related to their association with Paramount.

Responding promptly to the breach, Paramount undertook measures to secure the compromised systems and swiftly initiated a comprehensive investigation to determine the extent and implications of the breach. The company has enlisted the services of a cybersecurity expert and is actively collaborating with law enforcement agencies in a comprehensive effort to investigate the incident.

In an assurance to the affected parties, Paramount conveyed its commitment to fortifying security protocols to avert the recurrence of similar incidents. While the breach affected a limited number of individuals—less than 100—Paramount demonstrated agility in notifying those affected and pertinent authorities.

A spokesperson for Paramount affirmed, "Upon detecting the unauthorized activity, we promptly took steps to identify and rectify the situation. We have duly informed fewer than 100 individuals whose personal information may have been compromised, and we have also apprised the appropriate authorities."

Currently, Paramount has refrained from disclosing whether the affected individuals are employees or customers, including subscribers of its streaming service Paramount+. Despite the limited information about the breach, it has been clarified that this particular incident is unrelated to a ransomware attack and holds no connection to the recent surge of data theft attacks attributed to the Clop group.
