Paramedic Billing Services reports data breach: Sensitive information compromised

Prominent medical billing company Paramedic Billing Services (PBS) filed a data breach notice with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights, marking a significant incident that exposed consumers’ sensitive information to an unauthorized party.

PBS’s "Notice of Data Incident" posted on its website shed light on the nature of the breach. According to the notice, the unauthorized party gained access to a range of sensitive consumer data, including names, Social Security numbers, contact information, medical information, health insurance details, driver’s license or state identification numbers, financial account information, payment card information, and dates of birth.

As part of their damage control efforts, PBS conducted a thorough investigation into the breach and sent data breach notification letters to all individuals whose personal information was compromised during the incident. These letters, distributed on July 21, 2023, are expected to provide detailed information on the specific data exposed for each affected individual.

The breach timeline indicates that PBS detected unusual activity on its computer network in May 2023. PBS promptly secured its systems and initiated a comprehensive investigation to delve deeper into the matter. The investigation’s outcome, revealed on June 23, 2023, confirmed that the unauthorized party had managed to access and copy certain files within PBS’s computer systems between May 15, 2023, and May 23, 2023. Subsequent analysis revealed that some accessed files contained sensitive patient information, sparking concern among both PBS and the affected consumers.

As a result, Paramedic Billing Services reviewed the compromised files to assess the extent of the data breach and to identify the consumers impacted by the incident. The range of breached information varies depending on the individual but may include the data points mentioned above, potentially exposing victims to identity theft and financial fraud.
