Money Mart disclosed a data security incident resulting in the unauthorised access to customers’ sensitive personal information.
Formerly known as Dollar Financial Group, Money Mart is a financial services company that offers cash advance and installment loans. It operates as a brand of Momentum Financial Services Group, which also owns The Check Cashing Store and Centz.
In a data security incident notice filed with the California Attorney General’s Office, Money Mart reported that it identified unauthorised access in early December to files hosted on a third-party application. The company promptly launched an investigation, with assistance from external cybersecurity experts, to determine the nature and scope of the incident.
It also took steps to secure the affected systems and notified relevant law enforcement authorities about the incident.
“Although the forensic investigation is ongoing, we have reasons to believe that certain personal information in our possession was accessed and acquired by an unauthorised third party,” Money Mart said.
The compromised data included names, And other personal identifiers including Social Security numbers.
Money Mart has advised all affected individuals to regularly monitor their credit reports, account and benefit statements and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement authorities, including the police and the state attorney general.
It has also offered complimentary identity protection and credit monitoring services through TransUnion to all affected individuals.
