The American arm of leading Japanese sex toys maker Tenga said it identified a limited data breach that exposed some customers’ email addresses and their correspondence with its customer service channel.
The company said it discovered the breach on February 12 and later confirmed that the incident only impacted some U.S. customers and did not have any impact on systems or databases located elsewhere.
"The information involved was limited to customer email addresses and related correspondence history," the company said. The security breach took place after hackers gained access to the email account of an employee and viewed customers’ names, email addresses, order details and chat histories.
According to TechCrunch which accessed the company’s email to affected customers, Tenga said the hacker may also have accessed precise order details and customer service enquiries, and sent spam emails to the hacked employee’s contacts, including customers.
The company said it reset the hacked employee’s corporate credentials and has implemented multi-factor authentication to prevent the hacker from infiltrating other systems or databases.
Established in 2005, Tenga sells about 80% of its products in Japan but also sells millions of products in the U.S., Spain, China and 38 other countries. According to available information, the company sold about 162 million products worldwide and earned a revenue of 11.5 billion yen, or £54.93 million in 2024.
The company is yet to issue a statement concerning the data breach and did not reveal how many customers were affected by the data security incident.
