Fujitsu confirms cyberattack, potential data breach sparks concern

Fujitsu, the multinational technology powerhouse, has acknowledged a cyberattack in a statement released on Friday, raising alarms over the potential compromise of personal data and customer information.

In its statement, Fujitsu revealed malware detection on numerous work computers within its network, prompting an internal investigation that uncovered the possibility of illicit extraction of files containing sensitive data. The company swiftly isolated the affected systems and initiated an inquiry into the breach’s origins and the extent of data leakage.

Fujitsu did not disclose details regarding the specific malware employed or the precise nature of the cyberattack, leaving the public and stakeholders in anticipation of further clarification.

Amid mounting concerns, Fujitsu refrained from specifying the type of personal information potentially compromised or the affected parties, whether employees, corporate clients, or users of government-utilized technologies developed by the company.

Fujitsu’s global stature, with approximately 124,000 employees and a wide-reaching clientele spanning government and private sectors, amplifies the significance of the breach, further exacerbated by recent controversies surrounding the company’s involvement in erroneous convictions of U.K. Post Office workers.

Despite inquiries, Fujitsu representatives remained unresponsive to requests for additional comment from TechCrunch regarding the cyberattack.

Fujitsu reported the incident to Japan’s data protection authority, the Personal Information Protection Commission, to address regulatory obligations, expressing concerns over potential data exposure. However, the company has not disclosed whether similar notifications have been issued to other governing bodies, including those in the United States.
