Carpet cleaning giant Stanley Steemer reports data breach affecting 68,000 individuals

Stanley Steemer, a prominent carpet cleaning company, disclosed that nearly 68,000 individuals fell victim to a cyberattack the firm encountered in March.

 

In filings submitted to Maine regulators, the Ohio-based cleaning enterprise revealed that hackers infiltrated their systems on February 10 and were detected on March 6.

 

Conducting a comprehensive review of compromised files, Stanley Steemer assessed the potential impact on sensitive information and the individuals involved. "Following an initial notification on November 15, 2023, Stanley Steemer continued an internal review to locate mailing addresses for potentially affected individuals," completed on November 20, the company stated.

 

The compromised data, susceptible to unauthorized access, primarily includes names and Social Security numbers, as confirmed by Stanley Steemer.

 

The company identified 67,921 individuals affected by the incident. However, specifics regarding the nature of the attack, whether it was a ransomware assault, remain undisclosed, with the company declining to respond to comment requests.

 

The Play ransomware gang claimed responsibility for the attack on March 17, purportedly absconding with accounting data, budgets, tax documents, passport images, etc. Stanley Steemer asserted that federal law enforcement was notified post-attack.

 

With reported sales of $577 million in 2021 and franchises across 49 states, Stanley Steemer is extending two years of complimentary credit monitoring services to the victims of the breach.
