Israel Electric Corporation, the largest supplier of electrical power in Israel and the Palestinian territories, suffered a significant DDoS attack last week that kept several parts of the country in the dark for hours.A number of Israeli cities were hit by power outages recently. According to a statement issued by an Israel Electric Corporation spokesperson, the outage was a result of a “technical glitch” that kept citizens without power supply in several parts of Israel.“Due to a glitch in one of the Haifa power plants, power outages are being felt in a number of areas around the country. Regular power supply was renewed to a number of areas and will be fully renewed in the next few minutes,” the spokesperson said. The power failure created massive traffic congestion in Tel Aviv and other parts of the country.Anonymous Sudan, a group of notorious threat actors who call themselves hacktivists, has claimed responsibility for the cyber attack on the Israel Electric Corporation. In a post on its Telegram channel, the group wrote “Is darkness good? Why don’t you have electricity?”The group is known to have launched distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks on multiple Israeli companies in the past. During the 75th anniversary of the establishment of Israel, the group targeted the websites of Israel’s Defence Ministry and security service Shin Bet. It has also been reported that the Facebook account of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was also targeted by a DDoS attack. In April, the group targeted Israeli cyber security company Check Point with a DDoS attack that forced the company to temporarily take its website offline. The group also attacked the official websites of several Israeli universities such as Tel Aviv University, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Haifa University, Weizmann Institute of Science, Open University of Israel, and Reichman University.“Infrastructure: Universities - Israel education sector has been dropped Because of what they did in Palestine,” Anonymous Sudan said on its Telegram channel. The Jerusalem Post reported the cyber attacks On April 4 but on the very next day, Anonymous Sudan listed the news agency as a victim on its Telegram channel. The group also used the Jerusalem Post’s Twitter account to announce the hacking.
