Multiple British media outlets, including CNN affiliate ITV, have reported that the personal medical records of Britain’s King Charles III were not accessed in an alleged data breach at a London hospital. The initial report emerged from The Daily Mirror, a UK tabloid.
The development follows an announcement by the United Kingdom’s data privacy watchdog, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), which confirmed it was assessing reports regarding an attempt to access the medical notes of the Princess of Wales. The princess had undergone abdominal surgery and was discharged from the facility on January 29.
King Charles III, currently undergoing cancer treatment, was receiving separate treatment at the same hospital for an enlarged prostate. Buckingham Palace declined to comment on the matter.
According to reports, up to three staff members at the clinic are under investigation in connection with the alleged incident involving the Princess of Wales’ records. Despite reaching out to Kensington Palace for comment, CNN has not received a response regarding the latest reports.
The London Clinic, where the incident allegedly occurred, stated it had nothing further to add to its previous statement, in which the hospital’s chief executive, Al Russell, assured that appropriate steps would be taken in case of any breach.
Health Minister Maria Caulfield warned that hospital staff could face prosecution if found guilty of accessing the princess’ medical records without permission. However, the Metropolitan Police stated they were unaware of any referral regarding the breach.
