The difficulty is that CISOs and CIOs are awash with information. Information security teams are often swamped by a flood of information about incidents, many of them trivial, that overwhelm security systems, making it challenging to identify genuine threats.

 

With so much information, how do you cut through the noise? You need threat visibility to be able to take action. And you need to be able to react at speed, to the point where you can actually pre-empt an attack. However, there are so many alerts. You can’t respond to everything. You need to be able to decide which are the real risks to manage, what is a genuine problem, and what is truly threatening and in need of rapid action.

 

This is where actionable threat intelligence comes into play – insights about cyber-threats that map risks back to your own particular IT environment, giving you visibility of the current situation and your capacity to take effective action.

But even when risks are prioritised, a big challenge for many companies are resources. There is never enough resource to do everything, and many commercial infosec solutions are pricey. Fortunately there are many tools from open-source communities that don’t require expensive software licensing. Knowing about these, and about when you need a commercial solution instead, is essential.

 

Many organisations are too reactive when it comes to cyber-security, trusting in low-value activity that saps resources. Success comes from being proactive and looking for threats. This is the only way to cut through the noise.
