DNA testing startup Veritas Genetics acknowledges data breach, fueling privacy concerns

Veritas Genetics, a DNA testing startup headquartered in Danvers, Massachusetts, disclosed a data breach that led to unauthorized access to certain customer information. While confirming the breach in its customer-facing portal, the company refrained from specifying the incident’s timeline.

Although the compromised portal did not house sensitive medical records or test results, Veritas Genetics chose not to disclose the nature of the pilfered data, citing a limited impact that only affected a few customers.

Despite declining to term the incident as data "theft," spokesperson Rodrigo Martinez abstained from furnishing supporting evidence for the assertion. The company’s official statement offered no further details regarding the breach. Bloomberg initially reported this development, shedding light on the breach that Veritas Genetics has not publicly acknowledged on its website.

Veritas Genetics, positioned among competitors like 23andMe, Ancestry, and MyHeritage, specializes in analyzing and interpreting human genomes based on individual DNA samples. This enables customers to gain insights into potential health risks they or their offspring might encounter.

Although the compromised data did not encompass personal health records, the incident is poised to amplify apprehensions surrounding data security in health startups, particularly those dealing with delicate DNA and genome information.

Privacy concerns loom large in genetic testing, especially in light of law enforcement agencies resorting to legal measures to procure DNA records for criminal investigations. Recently, a Florida police department leveraged a groundbreaking warrant to scour the entire database of GEDmatch, a DNA testing firm. Last year, GEDmatch played a pivotal role in the apprehension of the infamous Golden State Killer.
