Booking.com, a Netherlands-based online travel and accommodation platform, has disclosed a data breach involving unauthorized access to customer booking information, potentially affecting an unknown number of users worldwide.

The company confirmed that suspicious activity was recently detected across a number of reservations, prompting an internal investigation and immediate containment measures. Customer notifications began as early as Monday, with affected users informed that personal data tied to specific bookings may have been accessed.

The compromised information includes names, email addresses, phone numbers and reservation details. In some cases, any additional information shared directly with accommodation providers may also have been exposed. The company stated that financial data stored within its systems was not accessed, though it did not rule out the possibility that other sensitive details shared externally, such as identification documents, could have been affected.

Booking.com has not disclosed the total number of impacted customers or the specific systems involved in the breach. Investigations remain ongoing as the company continues to assess the scope and nature of the incident.

As a precaution, the company has reset PIN codes associated with affected reservations and advised customers to remain alert to potential phishing attempts, including fraudulent communications requesting payments via bank transfers or messaging platforms.

Booking.com operates as part of Booking Holdings, a U.S.-based travel technology company that also owns platforms such as Agoda, Kayak and OpenTable. The platform lists more than 30 million properties globally and facilitates millions of bookings each year.

Regulatory authorities have been notified of the breach, including the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner. Increased scrutiny is expected as officials monitor the company’s response and compliance with data protection obligations.
