Virginia School System Hit by Ransomware Attack: Investigation Underway

MIDDLESEX COUNTY, Va. - Middlesex County Public Schools in Virginia is currently grappling with a ransomware attack that has prompted a joint investigation by the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security.

 

In a statement released by Superintendent Dr. Tracy Seitz, it was confirmed that the school system had fallen victim to a ransomware attack. Dr. Seitz assured the public that daily operations have been minimally impacted, but the primary concern now is to ascertain whether any personal information belonging to students or staff has been compromised. To address the situation and prevent future attacks, Middlesex County Public Schools is working closely with law enforcement agencies and cybersecurity experts. Unfortunately, due to the ongoing investigations, specific details regarding the attack are being withheld.

 

The incident took place just before the end of the school year and is part of a concerning trend of ransomware attacks targeting educational institutions. Previous incidents have been reported in Minnesota, Boston, West Virginia, and Franklin County, Virginia. In a related development, the cybersecurity organization BetterCyber disclosed that the Akira ransomware group has claimed responsibility for hacking into the Middlesex County Public Schools website and purloining approximately 543 GB of data.
