The United States has imposed sanctions on 12 AO Kaspersky Lab senior leaders, citing cybersecurity risks associated with the Russian company’s antivirus software. This move follows the Biden administration’s recent decision to prohibit the sale of Kaspersky’s products in the US.
The sanctions target key executives, including the chief business development officer, chief operating officer, legal officer, and corporate communications chief. However, the Treasury Department has not sanctioned Kaspersky Lab, its parent or subsidiary companies, or its CEO, Eugene Kaspersky.
Brian Nelson, Treasury Under Secretary, emphasized the administration’s commitment to protecting the nation’s cyber infrastructure. "Today’s action against the leadership of Kaspersky Lab underscores our commitment to ensure the integrity of our cyber domain and to protect our citizens against malicious cyber threats," he stated.
This development is part of the Biden administration’s broader strategy to mitigate potential Russian cyber threats and to exert pressure on Moscow amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Recently, AO Kaspersky was placed on a Commerce trade-restriction list for allegedly supporting Russian military intelligence operations.
The US government has expressed serious concerns over the risks posed by Kaspersky’s software, citing Russia’s influence over the company and the software’s extensive access to computer systems. Officials fear this access could be exploited to steal sensitive information, install malware, or withhold critical updates.
Effective September 29, the US has banned sales, resales, and software updates for Kaspersky products within its borders. The sanctions also prohibited American companies and citizens from engaging in financial transactions with the sanctioned Kaspersky executives and freezing their assets held in the US.
