Cloud infrastructure firm De Novo has resumed normal operations after a weekend power outage brought several vital Ukrainian digital services — from government apps to financial platforms — temporarily offline.
The outage impacted the Diia state services app, mobile banking, postal operator Nova Post and contactless payments such as Apple Pay and Google Pay. Kyiv residents reported difficulties using metro services and making electronic payments during the disruption.
De Novo CEO Maksym Ahieiev said the incident was caused by a failure in the data centre’s automatic power switching system, which delayed the activation of backup batteries and generators. The resulting power loss lasted around 15 minutes, but it took nearly six hours for full services to resume. Ahieiev ruled out a cyberattack but confirmed an internal investigation is ongoing.
Ukraine’s increasing reliance on cloud technologies has grown since Russia’s full-scale invasion, with businesses and government entities migrating data to the cloud to protect against physical destruction. Many now operate with multiple providers to ensure redundancy and rapid recovery.
This latest disruption follows a cyberattack earlier in the year on another Ukrainian data centre, Parkovy, which supports several state bodies. That incident affected services including the national postal service, the railway network and a major energy provider. The attack was attributed to threat actors linked to Russia.
Separately, Epicentr, Ukraine’s largest DIY chain, reported a technical issue on Monday that affected its tills and mobile application. It is not yet known whether the problem is connected to De Novo’s outage.
