UK Bans Video Game Controllers Exports to Russia to Disrupt Drone Use

The UK government has announced a fresh wave of sanctions targeting Russia’s ability to wage war in Ukraine — including a ban on exporting video game controllers believed to be used in piloting attack drones.

Unveiled on Thursday, the latest package includes over 150 new trade restrictions. Officials say the measures are aimed at closing loopholes and preventing “civilian” items from being repurposed for military use.

“Putin has been exploiting open markets to turn everyday goods into instruments of war,” said Minister for Trade Sanctions, Stephen Doughty. “We’re tightening the net — controllers used for gaming won’t be guiding drones that kill civilians.”

The move mirrors similar restrictions introduced by the EU earlier this year, targeting joysticks and gaming hardware suspected of being used in drone operations.

The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office said the updated sanctions also include bans on software used in Russian oil and gas exploration, as well as exports of advanced technologies, chemicals, machinery, and metals.

According to UN observers, short-range drones have become a growing threat to civilians in frontline areas of Ukraine, with reports of attacks on people travelling in buses and cars.

Doughty said the UK remains committed to undercutting Russia’s war economy. “By choking off access to specialist tools and technology, we’re hitting Russia where it hurts — its ability to sustain this illegal invasion.”

The measures come amid growing concern over wavering US support for Ukraine, as political shifts in Washington prompt questions about long-term Western unity.

In contrast, UK officials reaffirmed their stance. Neil Holland, the UK’s envoy to the OSCE, said: “We will keep supporting Ukraine and intensifying pressure on Russia to halt this war of aggression.”
