The Maids International, a franchise-based cleaning company in Omaha, Nebraska, notified the Attorney General of Massachusetts of a significant data breach involving unauthorized access to sensitive consumer information. The company, which operates a cleaning service franchise with over 200 locations across the U.S. and Canada, reported that the breach affected numerous individuals’ details, including names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, driver’s license numbers, passport numbers, phone numbers, and protected health information.
The breach was first detected on January 22, 2024, when TMI observed suspicious activity within its computer network. In response, the company promptly disconnected its network, reset all passwords, and engaged third-party data security experts to assist with the investigation. By April 18, 2024, TMI confirmed that unauthorized access had occurred, compromising certain confidential consumer data files.
Following a thorough review of the compromised files, TMI completed its assessment on May 24, 2024. The company determined which information had been exposed and identified the affected individuals.
Subsequently, on September 12, 2024, TMI began mailing data breach notification letters to all affected individuals. These notifications are intended to inform recipients about the nature of the information compromised and provide guidance on the steps they can take to protect themselves.
Founded in 1979 and headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska, The Maids International operates as a franchise system, serving over 600 markets through approximately 200 locations. The company generates around $70 million in annual revenue. Despite its longstanding presence in the industry, this breach underscores the vulnerability of even established organizations to cyberattacks.
