Texas Tech Health Sciences Center confirms cyberattack, patient data exposed

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso (TTUHSC El Paso) and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) have disclosed a data breach resulting from a cybersecurity attack that potentially exposed sensitive patient information. The breach, which occurred between September 17 and September 29, caused temporary disruptions to several computer systems and applications within the organization.

An investigation revealed that unauthorized access to or removal of certain files and folders from the network led to the exposure of personal and health-related information. The data types potentially affected vary by individual but may include personal identification such as name, date of birth, address, driver’s license number, and government-issued identification numbers. Financial account details, health insurance information, medical records numbers, billing and claims information, and diagnosis and treatment details may also have been impacted.

TTUHSC El Paso and TTUHSC are in the process of notifying individuals whose data may have been compromised. To assist affected individuals, they have set up a toll-free hotline at 1-866-902-1996 for inquiries and support.

The institutions are also conducting a comprehensive review of their existing cybersecurity measures and have initiated steps to bolster system security and monitoring processes to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Monitoring credit reports, reviewing financial statements for errors, examining health insurance statements for discrepancies, and guarding against identity theft are recommended.
