Texas Capital Bank data breach puts 91,000 customers' social security numbers at fraud risk

Texas Capital Bank, a Dallas-based financial institution with approximately $33.4 billion in assets, suffered a data breach on April 26 and 27, 2026, that exposed the personal information of more than 91,000 individuals, including Social Security numbers — data that can be exploited to open fraudulent accounts or commit other forms of identity theft.

The bank disclosed the incident to the California Attorney General on May 28, 2026, and to the Texas Attorney General the following day. Regulatory filings identify 86,067 Texas residents and 5,134 Washington state residents as affected. The bank operates with approximately 1,720 employees and is the principal subsidiary of Texas Capital Bancshares Inc., which trades on Nasdaq under the ticker TCBI.

Personal information exposed in the breach included names and Social Security numbers. The bank is notifying affected individuals by U.S. Mail.

To help affected customers guard against potential misuse of their information, Texas Capital Bank is offering a complimentary 24-month membership to Experian IdentityWorks, an identity detection and resolution service. The membership includes an Experian credit report at enrollment, daily credit reports for members who access the service online, and active monitoring of Experian files for signs of fraud. The service also employs technology that continuously scans the web, chat rooms and online bulletin boards for evidence that personal information is being traded or sold on the dark web.

Members who experience identity fraud will have access to restoration specialists trained to address both credit-related and non-credit-related fraud. That restoration support remains available for two years from the date of the notification letter and does not require immediate action. The membership also includes Experian IdentityWorks ExtendCare, which continues identity restoration support beyond the membership period. Up to $1 million in identity theft insurance is included, covering certain costs and unauthorized electronic fund transfers; that coverage is underwritten and administered by American Bankers Insurance Company of Florida, an Assurant company.

Affected individuals can activate their membership using the code provided in their mailed notification. Enrollment must be completed by Sept. 30, 2026, and no credit card is required. Customers who prefer not to enroll online may contact Experian’s customer care team by phone between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Central Time, excluding major U.S. holidays, through the same deadline.
