River City Eye Care reports data breach following cyberattack claimed by Genesis threat group

River City Eye Care, an Oregon-based provider of optometry services with offices in Portland and Happy Valley, has begun notifying patients about a data breach that exposed sensitive personal information following unauthorized access to its computer network.

The practice detected unusual network activity around September 8, 2025, and immediately launched an investigation to determine the cause and extent of the incident. The investigation confirmed that an unauthorized party had gained access to the network and exfiltrated files containing patient data. River City Eye Care completed its review of the affected files on October 1, 2025.

According to the practice’s public notice, the information involved varies by individual but may include names in combination with one or more of the following: address, email address, phone number, and date of birth. For a limited number of patients, Social Security numbers and driver’s license numbers were also affected. The practice began mailing notification letters to affected individuals on October 16, 2025, and has implemented additional security measures to help prevent similar incidents in the future.

While the exact number of impacted individuals has not been disclosed, the breach was also reported to the Vermont Attorney General’s Office on October 20, 2025. As of this week, the incident has not yet appeared on the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights’ breach portal, which tracks large healthcare data breaches.

The Genesis threat group has claimed responsibility for the attack, alleging that it stole 200 gigabytes of data from company management hosts and file servers. The group, which describes itself as operating a data extraction rather than a file encryption scheme, has listed River City Eye Care on its data leak site and claims to have made the stolen information available for download. However, the authenticity of these claims has not been independently verified.

Founded more than two decades ago, River City Eye Care provides comprehensive eye exams, medical eye care, and treatment for conditions such as glaucoma and cataracts. The practice also operates optical boutiques and on-site laboratories, offering patients both clinical and vision correction services in one location.
