Ransomware Attack on Askul Disrupts Muji’s Retail Operations

Japanese retail giant Muji said it has suspended a significant portion of its operations following a recent ransomware attack that targeted its primary delivery partner, Askul.

In a data security incident notice published on October 21, Askul reported that it is dealing with a system failure caused by a significant ransomware attack on its internal network. The logistics company promptly launched an investigation, enlisting the support of external cyber security experts to assess the nature and extent of the incident.

It also took steps to secure the affected platform and notified relevant law enforcement authorities about the same.

Askul stated that it was forced to suspend the acceptance of new delivery orders due to a website glitch that redirected clients to an error page.

“Orders that have not been delivered as of October 21, 2025 will be canceled sequentially. If you press the "Member Registration" button, you will be transferred to the error screen.

“Applications for returns, mailing receipts, sending catalogs, and various collection services are also suspended. We have also suspended inquiries and orders at Rohaco Drug East Japan and Rohaco Drug West Japan.

“The customer service desk phone is currently difficult to connect. In addition, the inquiry form on the website has been suspended,” Askul said.

One of the affected clients, Japanese retail Giant Muji, said that the ransomware attack on its delivery partner disrupted all retail services, including browsing or making purchases on its online store, viewing order histories via the Muji app, and displaying certain web content.

“Due to the impact of the logistics failure of the online store, the following services and functions are currently suspended. The resumption schedule has not been decided yet,” Muji said.

Other Japanese retailers — including household goods chain Loft and department store Sogo & Seibu — also reported disruptions, suspending online orders and certain product shipments linked to Askul’s logistics systems.
