RansomHub group claims major ransomware attack on Frontier Communications

The infamous RansomHub ransomware group has claimed responsibility for a major cyber attack on American telecommunications company Frontier Communications.

 

In a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Frontier Communications said that on April 14, it identified unauthorised access to its internal network. The company immediately launched an investigation and engaged third party cyber security experts to determine the nature and scope of the incident.

 

It also “initiated its previously established cyber incident response protocols and took measures to contain the incident.”

 

“As part of this process, the containment measures, which included shutting down certain of the Company’s systems, resulted in an operational disruption that could be considered material,” reads Frontier’s filing with the SEC.

 

The company says it continues to investigate the incident, has engaged cybersecurity experts, and has notified law enforcement authorities but does not believe the incident could materially impact its financial condition or operational performance.

 

“Based on the Company’s investigation, it has determined that the third party was likely a cybercrime group, which gained access to, among other information, personally identifiable information,” Frontier added.

 

While the telecom provider said that it has restored affected systems and is in the process of regaining complete operational functionality, the cyber security incident affected its official website and mobile app.

 

Recently, the RansomHub hacker group claimed responsibility for the cyber attack on Frontier Communications and listed it as a victim on its data leak site on the Dark Web. The group claims to be in possession of 5 gigabytes of data stolen from the telecom company and has threatened to leak the files in around 9 days if its ransom demands aren’t met.
