Power transmission equipment maker Volex investigating major cyber attack on its network

UK-based critical power and data transmission equipment manufacturer Volex said it suffered a cyber attack that caused disruption to its daily operations and production levels.

Established in the Manchester suburb of Gorton in 1892 and presently headquartered in Basingstoke, UK, Volex is a leading integrated manufacturing specialist for performance-critical applications and power products. The company has 19 manufacturing facilities worldwide and employs over 11,500 people.

In a recent cyber security incident notification, Volex said it identified a cyber security intrusion in its internal network that involved threat actors gaining unauthorised access to “certain IT systems and data, at some of the Group’s international sites.”

“On becoming aware of the incident, the Group enacted its established IT security protocols and took immediate steps to stop the unauthorised access to its systems and data,” the notice reads.

The company said it engaged third-party cyber security experts to investigate the cyber attack and understand the nature and scope of the incident. Volex confirmed that it will implement an incident response plan and keep all its 27 manufacturing locations across 24 countries operational while the company resolves the data security incident.

“The actions taken to date have ensured that all sites remain operational, with minimal disruption to global production levels, and the Group continues to trade with its customers and suppliers,” the company added.

While Volex is yet to share details on how the threat actors gained access to its internal network or the kind of data accessed by them, it has assured that the incident did not have any financial impact on the company.

Volex Group has also assured all its customers and suppliers that it will provide updates about the data security incident as and when available.
