Omnipod DASH Insulin Pump Users Fall Victim to Data Breach

In January 2023, Insulet, the manufacturer of Omnipod insulin pumps, suffered a data breach that impacted protected health information of roughly 29,000 users of the Omnipod DASH pump.

A letter was sent to the affected users by Insulet on Jan. 5, which stated that the breach involved the sharing of limited personal information, such as users’ IP addresses and their use of the Omnipod DASH system, with Insulet’s third-party consultants.

It is reassuring to note that the breach did not compromise any financial information, email addresses, social security numbers or passwords. Despite this, the data breach is a reminder of the need for individuals and companies to be cautious and take necessary measures to protect personal information.

In response to the data breach, the US Department of Health and Human Services is conducting an investigation. The breach is connected to a recall of Omnipod DASH’s Personal Diabetes Manager (PDM) in November 2022. The PDM is the hand-held controller used to operate Omnipod DASH for users without an Android smartphone as the Omnipod mobile app is not compatible with iOS devices. The recall was prompted by several reports of battery leakages and overheating after prolonged use of the PDM.
