Nucor shuts down systems after cyber attack

American steel manufacturer Nucor Corporation said it suffered a significant data security incident that forced the company to take several critical systems offline.

 

Based in Charlotte, North Carolina, Nucor Corporation is the largest steel producer in the United States and the largest recycler of scrap in North America.

 

In a 8-K filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on May 13, Nucor said it recently identified a data security incident where unauthorised threat actors infiltrated the company’s internal network and accessed certain systems.

 

The company immediately launched an investigation, with assistance from external cyber security experts, to determine the nature and scope of the incident.

 

“Upon detecting the incident, the Company began promptly taking steps to contain and respond to the incident, including activating its incident response plan, proactively taking potentially affected systems offline and implementing other containment, remediation, or recovery measures,” Nucor said in its filing.

 

Nucor reported the incident to relevant law enforcement authorities and is collaborating with them to resolve the matter at the earliest.

 

“As of the date of this filing and in an abundance of caution, the Company temporarily and proactively halted certain production operations at various locations. 

 

“However, the Company is currently in the process of restarting the affected operations,” Nucor added.

 

The company is yet to share details on who is behind the cyber attack, the nature of the same or whether any data was stolen during the incident.

 

Also, at the time of publishing, no known hacker group claimed responsibility for the cyber attack on Nucor. The steel manufacturing giant also did not share whether it has received a ransom demand.
