
Global travel booking agency Thomas Cook said its Indian division suffered a serious cyber security incident that disrupted its IT systems.
Headquartered in Mumbai, India, Thomas Cook India provides travel services such as foreign exchange, international and domestic holiday bookings, visas, passports, travel insurance, and more.
In a filing with the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) on December 31, Thomas Cook India said that it recently identified a data security incident that compromised certain systems in its internal network.
Immediately after identifying the incident, Thomas Cook said it launched an investigation, with assistance from external cyber security experts, to determine the nature and scope of the incident. The travel agency added that it took necessary steps to contain the incident, including taking its affected systems offline.
At the time of writing, Thomas Cook India’s website displayed the following message: “Site is undergoing maintenance. Please try again in a few minutes.”
“We are working with cybersecurity specialists to support the investigation and identify the scope of the issue,” the company said in its filing.
While Thomas Cook is yet to share details of the cyber security incident, as soon as the news came to light, the company’s share price dipped by 0.53% on December 31 trading session.
As of now, no known hacker group has claimed responsibility for the cyber attack on Thomas Cook India. The company also did not share details on who is responsible for the attack, the nature and scope of the same or whether it has received a ransom demand.
