The state of Nevada said it is currently working to recover from a major cyber attack that occurred last month but has not provided a timeline for when its systems will be fully restored.
In a press release posted on X, Nevada Governor’s office said that on August 24 state officials identified a data security incident that affected its internal network. State officials immediately launched an investigation, with assistance from external cyber security experts, to determine the nature and scope of the incident.
In a separate press release, officials added that the data security incident affected several critical systems, however, emergency and essential services including 911 remained operational.
“The State closed offices on Monday and Tuesday, but State offices will begin to offer in-person services later this week. Agencies will announce when counters reopen and any alternative options.
“State websites and phone lines may be intermittently unavailable. If a site or line does not respond, please try again later,” officials said.
Furthermore, the incident “did not impact State payroll, and all State employees will be paid on time through the normal process.”
To keep the public informed, the state has set up a temporary website detailing the recent ransomware attack, during which cybercriminals breached internal networks, exfiltrated sensitive data, and locked down key systems through encryption.
“To contain the threat, teams isolated and took some systems offline while restoring others safely in stages. The incident remains under active state and federal investigation in coordination with CISA and the FBI. To protect internal systems during an ongoing criminal investigation, technical details cannot be shared at this time,” state officials said.
The incident is still affecting the availability of certain state technology systems, with some websites and phone lines experiencing delays or temporary outages during the recovery process.
